The British Cycling Go-Ride scheme at Colchester Sports Park, where youngsters can enjoy a safe space to master their cycling skills with the help of a qualified coach, is now bookable online.

It’s the latest in services offered by Colchester City Council-run leisure facilities, Leisure World and Colchester Sports Park, to move to a new online booking system. Leisure World Colchester’s leisure pool sessions, birthday parties, swimming lessons and school holiday camps are already available to book online via www.colchesterleisureworld.digitickets.co.uk.

Go-Ride – a national British Cycling scheme for clubs and young peopleuses the Sports Park facilities including the specially painted Learn to Ride area, a safe space for beginners to practice riding their bikes. Go-Ride provides regular expert coaching sessions, in a traffic-free environment, designed to encourage a lifelong love of cycling and create opportunities for progression into the world of competitive cycling.

British Cycling has a Go-Ride coach, in partnership with Colchester City Council, that delivers the programme to youngsters in the community, schools and clubs, to help find the next Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Kenny or Dame Sarah Storey.

British Cycling is one of the world’s most successful sports governing bodies, with more than 130,000 members. From winning Olympic and Paralympic gold medals to inspiring almost two million people to ride their bikes regularly, the organisation is committed to making cycling the number one sport and activity of choice in Britain.

The £28.8m Colchester Sports Park, which opened in April 2021 and is located off junction 28 of the A12, boasts several state-of-the-art facilities for cyclists, including a one-mile floodlit track and a cycle pump track for children. Other amenities at the 76-acre sport and leisure facility include 3G pitches, rugby pitches, a multi-use sports centre, fitness suite, exercise studios, an interactive velo studio, indoor cricket, badminton, futsal and archery.

Cllr Michelle Burrows, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “I am delighted that we are able to support this exciting programme, which encourages more young people to learn to ride their bikes safely and take up cycling for the benefit of their physical, mental and social health – and perhaps even help forge a career in competitive cycling.

“Go-Ride is such a positive way to promote cycling to a new generation and a fabulous opportunity for Colchester Sports Park to work with British Cycling.”
