Mini cycling hub proposal at Old Heath

PUBLISHED: 14 November 2024

Wheels for All Colchester is now proposing a mini cycling hub at Old Heath Recreation Ground. Following on from the recent consultation event held on 22 October, we would like to continue engaging with residents to provide more information, answer any questions and gather further feedback on this proposal.

The proposal for Old Heath Recreation Ground is for a much smaller and community feel hub than our main facility at Colchester Sports Park, designed to serve people in the Old Heath and New Town areas who may find it challenging to reach our primary location.

To ensure that all residents have a chance to learn more, ask questions and share their thoughts, we invite you to join us for two upcoming consultation events on Saturday 16 November from 10am to 12noon at Old Heath Recreation (look out for our purple flag near the GO4 Café) and Wednesday 27 November from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at St. Stephen’s Church at Canterbury Road.

Jo Smith, Wheels for All Coordinator (Colchester) said: “We hope these events will reach out to the wider community of Old Heath and New Town and give those that could not make our daytime event the opportunity to talk with us about our plans.

“If approved, our cycling sessions would take place once a week for approximately two hours, typically scheduled on a weekday in the morning during quieter periods in the park, to minimise any impact on other park users. These sessions would use slow-paced, adapted cycles to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.  We look forward to meeting with you at one of our upcoming sessions to discuss this exciting opportunity for Old Heath.”

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage, and Public Protection said: “Accessible cycling brings tremendous benefits to our community, from boosting physical health and mental well-being to fostering social inclusion. It has been especially valuable for people with disabilities, those recovering from injuries, and individuals with long-term health conditions who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy cycling. I sincerely hope to see more cycling hubs across Colchester, allowing even more residents to benefit from this fantastic resource.”
