Colchester Museums and Lion Walk Shopping Centre to host unique art installations

PUBLISHED: 13 June 2023

Internationally known artist Will Teather is bringing an unusual visual art event to Colchester’s city centre this summer. Visitors and residents will be able to wonder at three large globes which will be located at Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum and Lion Walk Shopping Centre, which are available to view now.

Each location will host its own large globe, depicting a scaled down version of its surroundings, enabling viewers to compare Will Teather’s versions to their real-life counterparts. Gaze into the orbs and head on a magical and enchanting journey complete with painstaking detail and 360-degree panoramas. Immerse yourself in a mini historic Colchester Castle, a stunning Georgian mansion and a vibrant and eclectic shopping and eating destination right in the heart of the city centre.

Councillor Michelle Burrows, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: "Will Teather’s globes have been exhibited both in the UK and internationally, but this is the first time the artist’s works will have been seen in Colchester – a real coup for the city. Each globe takes months of painstaking work to complete, and there is something quite magical about the way he creates a sense of 'other worldliness' in his work. We are honoured Will has chosen Colchester for his next installations. The globes represent yet another event in our Year of Celebration calendar, and we are in for a real treat!

Artist Will Teather said: “I can’t wait to unveil these new artworks. I hope that they present a unique visual spectacle and turn the viewer’s world inside-out for a moment. When developing the original idea of the globes I wanted to find somewhere different to take realist painting, a new adventure. Each globe contains a few surprises on closer inspection, which I think will add further interest for viewers as they compare them to their surroundings. I hope the city of Colchester enjoys the installations.”

Martin Leatherdale, Lion Walk Shopping Centre, said: “We are delighted to be part of the art trail at Lion Walk Shopping Centre and have enjoyed working with Will over the last few months on this project. We look forward to seeing the installation and Will’s creative mastery come to life in Colchester.”

The globes promise be a unique marvel in the very heart of the city-centre and will be enjoyed by visitors and residents alike during the Year of Celebration.

The trail can be enjoyed from 12 June to 18 January 2024 and is supported by Arts Council England, Colchester Museums and Colchester City Council's Cultural and Creative Events Fund. All globes are free to visit and accessible during normal museum opening hours. A talk by the artist will take place with Colchester Museums later in the year.
