The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Tim Young, will lead a procession of local dignitaries through the city to the annual St. George’s Day service at St. James the Great Church, East Hill, on Sunday, 23 April.
The traditional civic event takes place with a 10.00am service conducted by Father James McCluskey, who will be joined by the Bishop of Colchester Right Reverend Roger Morris and the mayor’s Chaplain Reverend Sue Howlett.
The Mayor and the Mayoress, Nicola Goodchild, will be joined by the Lord-Lieutenant of Essex Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, High Sheriff of Essex Mr Charles Bishop, Garrison Commander Lt Col Ed Rankin and other representatives of the Army, members and representatives of Colchester City Council, and other dignitaries, in a procession that will set off from the Town Hall at 09.40 am.
An invitation to attend the service has also been extended to partners and guests of those taking part in the procession, together with representatives from the local community.
Mayor Tim Young said: “I am truly honoured to be leading this year’s St George’s Day celebrations – the first such event for Colchester as it continues its year of celebration as a new city.
“It is a day when we can celebrate England's rich cultural heritage and all that is great about our city and our country. I am certain it will be a day to remember!”
Later, the mayor will take the salute at the Town Hall as a parade of uniformed youth groups, including scouts, cubs, beavers, guides, brownies, air cadets and sea scouts, marches through the town to Castle Park, where he will join them for a special service.
