Calling all litter heroes across the city! It’s time to help improve the environment on our doorstep by taking part in the Great British Spring Clean 2023.
The Great British Spring Clean, which is organised nationally by Keep Britain Tidy and supported locally by Colchester City Council, is set to return from 17 March to 2 April 2023.
From 23 February, you will be able to pledge to take part in the 2023 campaign and help collect even more bags than last year!
This year’s campaign will once again see tonnes of litter being removed from the environment. Last year was a huge success, so let’s make Spring Clean 2023 the biggest yet!
Using the ‘three bags full’ approach, volunteers will be asked to separate the litter they pick into three bags: one for plastic bottles, one for aluminium cans and a third for the rest of the rubbish.
Colchester City Council’s neighbourhood services team will then collect these bags to ensure that they are recycled appropriately. They can also support your litter pick by providing you with bags, hi-vis jackets and loan you litter pickers, including extra-long ones for those tricky spots, smaller ones for children and ones specifically designed for use on beaches.
Cllr Julie Young, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: “I encourage all residents to take part and enjoy the day – it’s such a great way to teach the younger generation how to care for the environment.
“We pay tribute to all our litter warriors. One thing we do know is that litter tends to attract more litter, so the sooner it is cleared up the better. Our hard-working neighbourhood teams cannot be everywhere, so it is vital that we act in partnership with local groups, parish councils, schools and businesses to keep our city clean.”
Cllr Martin Goss, Colchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Waste, added: “In recent years, we have come to rely even more on places close to home – perhaps the local park or beach – as somewhere to escape to, to exercise and to play. We have all come to realise just how important our local park or green space is for our mental and physical health. We need to take care of these spaces and ensure they aren’t spoiled by litter.
“Residents who would like to make a regular difference to their local area can also sign up to become Litter Warriors. In groups of up to 20 friends, family or neighbours, Litter Warrior’s pledge 16 hours per month to keep their community spick and span. Together we can make a real difference to the environment on our doorstep.”
