Vineyard Street Lift Refurbishment

PUBLISHED: 2 February 2023

Date issued: 2 February 2023

Refurbishment work on Vineyard Street lift, which links Vineyard Street car park and the city centre, start this month.

The lift will be closed for the works from Friday 10 February, for approximately eight weeks, depending on weather conditions.

The aim of the works is to improve the availability and reliability of this lift by replacing and refurbishing several major mechanical components.

Cllr Martin Goss, Colchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Waste, said: “Years of wear and tear has taken its toll on this lift, and it frequently needs repairing. Although you won’t see a difference to how the lift looks on the outside, we’re investing £81,000 to replace several major components, which will make the lift more reliable in the future.”

There will not be any disruption to Vineyard Street car park whilst the works to the lift take place, however, visitors and workers in Colchester who require the lift to access the city centre can still take advantage of the great value parking available at the Council’s other award-winning car parks nearby, including Britannia and Priory Street, both of which offer disabled parking bays.

If poor weather prevents works from taking place, the completion date will be extended. Notices are currently in place in Vineyard Street car park and on the Council’s website to give notice of the works to motorists.
