Have your say on the council’s future plans

PUBLISHED: 5 October 2022

Residents are being asked their views on the council’s future priorities, as the authority embarks on a process of transformation to fend off soaring inflation, borrowing costs and spiralling energy bills.

Like many local authorities, the council is facing significant fiscal challenges and recently confirmed stark forecasts that suggest it is facing even greater pressures next year and beyond.

With soaring costs unlikely to be matched by increased funding or income, the council is looking at a “root and branch” review of its operations and its strategic and service priorities and asking the public to help inform its future plans.

From the 5 October until 30 October, people will be able to complete a short online survey to help the council re-evaluate its priorities to meet the challenges ahead and continue to deliver the services residents and businesses need.

One question, for example, asks respondents to rank the five current priorities as laid out in the council’s 2020-2023 Strategic Plan, while another asks them to grade existing services in order of importance.

Following the survey, the council will invite members of the public to attend a series of face-to-face focus groups and workshops.

Cllr David King, Leader of the Council, said: “Like many residents struggling with a sharp rise in the cost of living, the council faces some very stark financial challenges over the coming months and years.

“We want to address these difficulties with cross-party and public support. This consultation is part of an important conversation underway on what our priorities should be, which will help us make the best decisions we can in difficult circumstances.

“Feedback from the survey will be combined with the outcome of a recent Local Government Association peer review and ongoing cross-party discussion. This will be crucial in shaping the future operation of the council and the way we will deliver key services, with others, for years to come.
“I encourage all residents to complete the survey and be part of the council’s transformation, so we can continue delivering the best services possible for our residents.”

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 supermarket vouchers to help with their weekly food shop.
