Over 60 schools across Essex, including 17 primary schools in Colchester, took part in Essex Schools Green Day, yesterday (6 July 2022), to learn about environmental issues, raise awareness and discover what they can do to reduce their impact on the planet.
In the run-up to the big day, council officers visited schools to boost participation, explain the council’s ongoing work to tackle the climate emergency, and share nature and gardening resources generously donated by Poplar Nurseries.
Other organisations, including the Mercury Theatre and the East of England Co-op, also lent their support by explaining how they have reduced their own environmental impact. The Co-op donated funds to support environmental projects in three schools across Essex, two locally.
The day was organised by the Multi Schools Council, which brings together school representatives from across Essex to discuss issues important to them. The first Green Day, in 2021, came about after children of the Multi Schools Council identified global warming and pollution as one of the most serious issues affecting children today. It is hoped Green Day will continue to be an important annual event in the school calendar.
Councillor Steph Nissen, Colchester Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: “It’s exciting to see so many schools supporting this brilliant day. The council is very keen to support schools and young people to become greener, and hopefully this day has helped inspire lots of youngsters to see the many ways they can help reduce their environmental impact.”

Essex County Council is currently offering a Climate Action Challenge Fund to further help schools and community groups to carry out environmental projects as well, and the Council is willing to help schools with any applications to this grant.
