Local people are getting behind Colchester Museums’ recently launched crowdfunding campaign with Art Happens, a platform run by Art Fund.
The museum is hoping to raise the last £15,000 of funding to help bring to life its new summer exhibition, Wicked Spirits? Witchcraft + Magic at Colchester Castle, in collaboration with the famous Museum of Witchcraft and Magic.
Concentrating on one of the most fascinating and rich periods in Colchester’s history, Wicked Spirits? Witchcraft + Magic will tell the stories of those who were imprisoned within the castle’s walls.
More than 100 generous people from around East Anglia have already donated to the campaign, bringing it to 22% of the target.* There are a wonderful range of rewards available for donors, such as exclusive prints, postcards, bags, tours and even a one-of-a-kind ‘familiar’. Donations start from £5 up to £2000. But there is still £11,628 to raise with 14 days to go.
Against a backdrop of recovery, like a lot of other museums and cultural organisations across the country, Colchester Museums know this exhibition will help welcome back visitors, but they need help to realise the full programme of displays and events planned.
Witchcraft and magic have long proved fascinating and compelling subjects, with many films and TV programmes, such as the recent BBC hit The Witchfinder, using it as inspiration, and many people wanting to learn more about the subject.
Pamela Donnelly, Chief Executive of Colchester Borough Council, said: “For many years, Colchester Castle has told the stories of those who hunted suspected witches such as the notorious Witch Finder General, Matthew Hopkins. Now is the time to shift the narrative and finally give that voice to those who were persecuted.
“This exhibition will shine a light on one of the most tragic periods of our history and engage new audiences with Colchester’s past. Both Colchester Museums and the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic believe now is the right time to tell this story.** The exhibition will attract new audiences, showcase Colchester’s rich heritage and history, and add value to the thousands of people who visit Colchester and its historic Castle every year.”
Donors can choose from a variety of unique rewards – all created especially for the project – and be a part of the Wicked Spirits? journey, with regular updates on progress from now until the exhibition opens, and beyond.
