Free Christmas parking

Colchester Borough Council is offering shoppers an early Christmas present with free parking in the town during Late Wednesdays again this year.

Motorists wishing to take advantage of this parking offer, will need to register their free parking stay using MiPermit.

For motorists who register their parking stay in a council-owned town centre car park after 3pm on Wednesday 8, 15 and 22 December, parking charges will be waived. Many of Colchester's vast selection of boutique and big-name stores are opening until late on these nights.

In addition to the free parking offer, as part of the MiPermit Discounts scheme, motorists will be able to claim a 50p discount on 17 December for visiting the MiPermit branded market stall on Culver Street West. To claim this discount, motorists will need to register their stay with MiPermit in a council owned town centre car park and scan the QR code in the app at the market stall.

Cllr Simon Crow, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment & Sustainability, said: “We’re pleased we can offer free parking for Late Wednesdays once again this year to support local businesses, and encourage more shoppers to enjoy the festive activities and in the town centre.

“Motorists will be able to enjoy this fantastic free parking offer by registering their stay with MiPermit. We hope this offer will encourage people to embrace the festive spirit and enjoy shopping in town this Christmas.

“I encourage motorists to take advantage of the new MiPermit Discounts offer this year by visiting the stall and find out more how they could be claiming parking discounts every time they use town centre car parks.”

This year CBC will be playing Christmas music in December at St Mary’s car park to welcome visitors and get shoppers in the festive spirit. Hoping to brighten the mood of car park users, music will continue to be played throughout the year including themed music to align with annual album days, Roman River music festival and more.

Cllr Darius Laws, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Heritage, said: "We are thrilled to welcome visitors and residents to the town centre this Christmas with some rousing Christmas tunes when they park in St Mary's carpark. The whole town is beginning to look merry and bright, and the welcoming music will enhance individuals experience of Christmas in Colchester.

“The music will continue to play after Christmas but will feature an eclectic mix of music to suit everyone, from Blur on annual album days to Beethoven and Rachmaninov, during the Roman River music festival. It's a great way to embrace Colchester's vibrant cultural offering.”
