Get composting at home

PUBLISHED: 5 November 2021

Colchester Borough Council is encouraging residents to get composting at home this autumn to save money and help the environment.

Home composting not only reduces your carbon footprint, but is also a great addition to your usual recycling habits as the nutrient-rich product is fantastic for your garden and could save you money too.

November is a busy month for keen gardeners and those picking up windfall fruit and autumn leaves. To encourage residents to get composting, Colchester Borough Council is promoting the compost bin special offer from Essex County Council. Bins are available from only £10. There’s also a multi-buy offer for residents with larger gardens or for those who team up with a friend of neighbour to buy a bin.

Councillor Simon Crow, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: “Composting some of your food waste along with your garden waste at home is simple and cost effective. The compost can be used on your garden as well as for your hanging baskets, window boxes and vegetable plots.

“Whether it’s vegetable peelings and eggshells from the kitchen, autumn leaves, shredded paper or the cuttings from one last outing for the lawnmower, simply throw it in your compost bin and over the winter months it will rot down to produce environmentally friendly compost. All you need is a compost bin and a small outside space to get started.”

If you don’t have a garden, or for garden waste that can’t be added to your home composter, Colchester resident’s kerbside collection limits for garden waste is one full brown wheelie bin (with a closable lid) or four white sacks. More information can be found at colchester.gov.uk/recycling

The food that can’t be put in home compost bin can go in the food waste recycling caddy for weekly collection by Colchester Borough Council.
