Leisure World centres across Colchester have delivered an impressive £5.8 million in social value over the past year, according to a new Sport England report – proving that local gyms, pools and classes are doing far more than just keeping people fit.
The report shows how Colchester City Council’s leisure services are making a real difference in three key areas:
- £1.19 million in health savings – by reducing the risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes, depression and dementia.
- £3.17 million in improved wellbeing – showing that regular activity makes people feel happier and more satisfied with life.
- £1.45 million in social impact – from building stronger communities to reducing crime.
“This report is a powerful reminder of the value our leisure centres bring to Colchester,” said Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Waste and Leisure. “They’re not just places to stay active – they’re community hubs that support mental health, fight isolation, and help people live longer, healthier lives.”
More than 258,000 visits were made to council-run centres for leisure activities between January and March 2025. Highlights include:
- Nearly 18,000 women getting active
- Strong engagement from older adults
- Above average participation from lower income households
The report also shows that swimming participation at Leisure World is 7% above the national average – a clear sign of strong community engagement in health and fitness. Fitness and group exercise classes also remain popular, with gym visits exceeding 66,000 over the same period. Notably, activity uptake among residents from the six most deprived areas has risen compared to the previous year, underlining the centre’s expanding role in providing inclusive access to wellbeing services.
Leisure World offers an Active Wellbeing programme, a 12-week initiative specifically designed for healthcare professionals to refer individuals who are living with, or at risk of, long-term health conditions. The programme provides tailored support and expert guidance to help participants achieve sustainable improvements in their physical and mental wellbeing.
Daniel, a recent participant, said: “The programme has been an incredible boost, it’s made me feel fantastic and absolutely worth the time and effort. It’s helped me get back on track mentally, and I feel motivated to keep going. The staff have been truly wonderful – so supportive and encouraging throughout”.
