Leisure World is proud to announce the launch of a brand-new community outreach initiative: ‘Leisure World in the Community.’ This inspiring programme is designed to make sport, leisure, and wellbeing activities free and accessible to all, regardless of age, ability, or background, while fostering a stronger, healthier, and more connected community.

Free and open to all residents, ‘Leisure World in the Community’ focuses on improving physical and mental wellbeing, encouraging active lifestyles, and providing supportive spaces where individuals can engage, learn, and thrive. Whether through fitness, education, healthcare awareness, or social support, the programme aims to bridge gaps and bring people together.

A Wide Range of Free Activities Include:
  • Inclusive multi-sports sessions for children of all abilities
  • Exercise classes tailored for over-65s and those with limited mobility
  • Yoga and Pilates sessions promoting mental calm and physical flexibility
  • First aid workshops designed to empower residents with life-saving knowledge
  • Healthy eating classes to support better nutrition and informed food choices
The programme officially launches on Tuesday, 22 April at Greenstead Community Centre, kicking off with an inclusive multi-sports session for children in school years 3 to 6. Running from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, the session will feature fun and accessible activities including Boccia, sitting volleyball, and more.

Also, on the 22 April at Greenstead, a community exercise class will take place at 4:45pm, specially designed for over-65s and individuals with mobility challenges. Led by a qualified instructor, the class will focus on gentle, low-impact exercises to support strength, balance, and wellbeing. Both sessions will also be held at the same times at Greenstead Community Centre on Tuesday 29 April. Spaces are limited and must be booked online here.

An ongoing calendar of events is in development, with future sessions set to roll out at community venues across Old Heath, St Anne’s, and the Hythe, as well as outdoor spaces such as Castle Park and Old Heath Recreation Ground. Activities will also be hosted at local schools, including St John’s Green Primary and TLA Secondary, ensuring wide-reaching access and engagement across the community.

Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure at Colchester City Council said: This programme is about more than just physical activity – it’s about connection, empowerment, and community spirit. We want every resident to feel welcome, supported, and inspired to live well.”

“By working closely with local schools, healthcare providers, and other community partners, Leisure World is ensuring this outreach effort has a real, lasting impact. Whether it's a young family looking for fun, accessible activities or an older adult seeking connection and gentle movement, ‘Leisure World in the Community’ offers something for everyone.”
