Colchester City Council is proud to launch its Youth Resident Panel, a new way for young people to help shape the future of the city. This panel builds on the success of the Residents' Panel, which has nearly 400 members. Now, younger residents have their own platform to share ideas and influence decisions.
The panel brings together students from local secondary schools and colleges, with representatives from Years 10, 11, and college. These young members discuss important topics that affect their communities.
So far, the Youth Resident Panel has met twice, covering key topics that matter to Colchester’s future. The first meeting focused on air pollution - what causes it, how it affects health (especially vulnerable people), and ways to improve air quality in the city. The group also created an action plan with practical solutions. The second meeting explored the importance of tourism to Colchester’s economy. Young people shared ideas on how to attract more visitors to Colchester Castle and Hollytrees Museum. They also discussed what makes museums exciting for young people and suggested ways to improve marketing.
The meetings are well attended, and the number of participants is growing. It is hoped even more schools and colleges will take part in the future.
Councillor Alison Jay, Colchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Transformation, said: "Our young people will be living, working and enjoying Colchester in the future. Their ideas and opinions are vital as we plan for the years ahead. The Youth Resident Panel is a fantastic way for them to get involved, shape services, and make sure all our residents’ voices are heard in decision-making."
The Youth Resident Panel meets every three months to discuss new topics. All local schools and colleges are invited to take part. To get involved, please contact residents.panel@colchester.gov.uk.
By listening to young residents, Colchester City Council is committed to making our city a better place for everyone. It looks forward to the positive changes that will come from this initiative.
