Mars has landed at Colchester Castle!

PUBLISHED: 24 March 2025

Following the phenomenal success of Gaia, Colchester Castle is thrilled to announce that Luke Jerram’s awe-inspiring touring artwork Mars is now open to visitors! From 20 March to 9 May 2025, this breathtaking installation brings the mysterious Red Planet to life inside one of the country's most historic landmarks.

This six-metre-diameter spherical sculpture, created using 120dpi detailed NASA imagery, offers an unparalleled view of Mars’ surface. Visitors will feel as if they are orbiting the planet, mapping every crater, volcano, valley, and mountain with incredible precision. Every centimetre of this internally-lit artwork represents 11 kilometres of the Martian landscape, providing a powerful sense of the planet’s vastness – despite it being nearly half the size of Earth.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection, said: “I’m thrilled Mars is finally here. Get ready to be transported to Mars’ desert wasteland and imagine what it would be like to set foot on this incredible planet. I encourage you to come and see this wonder for yourselves.”

Book your entry tickets online now to witness this stunning fusion of art, science, and history. Admission includes access to the Castle Museum, where visitors can explore 2,000 years of history while marvelling at the wonders of the uninhabited Red Planet.

Don’t miss out – Mars has landed, and it’s waiting for you!
