‘Together We Thrive’ – Colchester joins global Commonwealth Day celebrations

PUBLISHED: 3 March 2025

Colchester City Council will proudly mark Commonwealth Day on Monday, 10 March, by raising the Commonwealth Flag in solidarity with communities around the world.

At 11am, Colchester will join cities and communities across the globe in this symbolic act, alongside Heads of State, civic leaders, young people, community groups, and ex-servicemen from Commonwealth nations.
During Colchester’s ceremony, the Mayor, Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, will deliver the Commonwealth Affirmation, joined by invited guests including the Lord Lieutenant of Essex Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, local community representatives, and members of the public.

The theme for Commonwealth Day 2025, ‘Together We Thrive’ encapsulates the strength of the Commonwealth Family – a network of 56 nations working together to uplift all citizens and build a future defined by opportunity and resilience.

The Mayor of Colchester said: “Commonwealth Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on a unique association that has endured for over 75 years. While its history is complex, the Commonwealth was of great significance to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who dedicated much of her life to fostering connections across nations and communities.

“This year’s theme, ‘Together We Thrive,’ reminds us that we are stronger together. In Colchester, we take pride in our diverse communities, many of whom have deep ties to Commonwealth countries. Commonwealth Day is not just about looking back; it’s about celebrating the vibrant, multicultural society we are today and the connections that continue to grow locally and globally.

“I’m delighted to be hosting a special reception following the flag-raising ceremony, where we will celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Colchester and the enduring ties that link our city to Commonwealth nations. It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together in the spirit of unity, resilience, and hope for the future.”

Across the UK, Commonwealth Day 2025 will be marked with a range of activities, including school assemblies, cultural events, debates, and a multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey in London.
