Colchester City Council is taking proactive steps to enhance both the safety and enjoyment of mountain biking at Iron Latch Wood. After collaborating with a professional trail-building company to assess the site's features, it was determined that only one jump, which has a steep drop of at least six metres, poses an immediate safety risk. This jump will be closed and made inaccessible to prevent further use.
We remain committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all site users and are actively working on plans to improve the site’s overall layout. These plans will include dedicated paths for walkers alongside bike-specific trails, while also ensuring the natural woodland habitat is preserved.
A workshop will be held early in the new year, inviting representatives from the mountain biking community to collaborate with the trail-building company. The goal is to integrate some of the existing routes with new, professionally designed features that align with best practices. These updates will include appropriate grading, improved signage, and opportunities for riders of all skill levels to progress safely.
We are confident that this collaborative effort will result in a well-maintained facility that caters to mountain bikers' needs while prioritising safety. Construction work is expected to begin later in the year, following the workshop and the completion of detailed planning.
Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “We are committed to supporting mountain biking at Iron Latch Wood and ensuring that the site is both safe and enjoyable for all riders. By working with experts and the local mountain biking community, we can create a sustainable and well-designed facility that offers something for everyone. This process will preserve the natural character of the area while improving safety and accessibility.”
