Residents of pensionable age are reminded that the deadline to apply for Pension Credit and still qualify for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment is fast approaching. Applications must be submitted by 21 December 2024 – leaving just over two weeks to apply and secure this vital support.
Pension Credit not only supplements the State Pension but also provides access to additional benefits, including full Local Council Tax Support, the Winter Fuel Payment, reduced NHS costs, and a free TV licence for those over 75. Despite its advantages, many pensioners are either unaware of their eligibility or hesitant to apply due to the perceived hassle. Others believe they will not qualify, but additional eligibility criteria –such as having a disability or being a carer – mean that many people may be missing out on this vital support.
It is possible to apply for Pension Credit and have the claim backdated by up to three months, provided there is entitlement during that time. This means the latest date to apply and still qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment is 21 December 2024.
Residents can find out more about Pension Credit and how to apply by visiting the Colchester City Council website. The Financial Equality and Wellbeing team is available to provide guidance through every step of the application process, ensuring no one misses out on the benefits they deserve.
