Last chance to experience Gaia at Colchester Castle

PUBLISHED: 30 August 2024

Don't miss your chance to see Gaia, the stunning six-meter diameter touring artwork, before it leaves Colchester Castle. Crafted by renowned artist Luke Jerram, this awe-inspiring piece offers visitors a unique and mesmerising view of our planet.

Developed in collaboration with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Bluedot, and the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centre's, Gaia features intricate 120dpi NASA imagery, displaying the Earth's surface in breathtaking detail. This artwork is a rare opportunity to see our planet as you've never seen it before, it's truly astonishing.

Drawing inspiration from the Overview Effect, a transformative experience described by astronauts, marked by a deep sense of awe, an understanding of the interconnectedness of all life, and a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship. It measures 2.1 million times smaller than the real Earth; each centimetre of Gaia’s internally lit sculpture represents 21 kilometres of the Earth’s surface. By standing 181 metres away from the artwork, the public is treated to a breathtaking view of the Earth as seen from the moon, creating a sense of scale and perspective that is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

Enhancing this remarkable visual experience is a specially crafted surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Jones, providing a multisensory encounter with the artwork.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection said, “This incredible artwork must be seen, its sheer size and detail pays a stunning homage to the beauty and complexity of our planet. The imagery used has been meticulously compiled from the Visible Earth series by NASA, ensuring its accuracy and authenticity whilst representing the Earth’s diverse landscapes. It's truly breathtaking, visit before the 15 September and take part in this extraordinary celebration of our planet.”
Gaia is included in standard Castle admission and will be on display from 19 July – 15 September 2024.
