As the world shifts towards more sustainable and cost-effective transport options, one local resident is leading by example by using the Colchester Car Club, which is run by Enterprise Car Club on the council’s behalf. With pay-as-you-go rates of £6 per hour to rent an electric car, Andy Burlinson has found a practical solution to his family's transport needs.
"I used to own a car when we had just our eldest child," says Burlinson, reflecting on his decision to join the car club instead of owning a car. "But when that car needed replacing, we decided to explore alternative options. Over a decade ago, we joined the Wombat car club, which operated in Colchester. We found it to be a very good service. However, when the Wombat car club ceased operations, we faced challenges in finding a suitable replacement until the Colchester Car Club started running."
Burlinson, who has been a member of the Colchester Car Club since it launched in 2022, emphasises the ease of access provided by the Enterprise mobile app. "Booking a car is simple through the app," he explains. "and you can book for as little as half an hour. While it's advisable to book in advance, I've found that I can usually get a car when I need it. The app also allows for the convenient unlocking and locking of the vehicle."
Living close to the city centre, Burlinson and his family primarily use the car club car based in Priory Street car park for shorter trips outside of Colchester. "We do all our shopping online or via delivery, and we work from home or when needed travel to the office by train, so we don’t need a car for shopping or to get to work," he notes. "Instead, it's mainly used for ad hoc things that are slightly further out and not easily reached on foot."
When asked about the furthest distance he's travelled using a car club car, Burlinson mentions Chelmsford, highlighting the flexibility and convenience of the service for regional travel.
Burlinson is a staunch advocate for the Colchester Car Club, encouraging other residents of Colchester to consider the benefits of joining. "It's been a game-changer for us," he says. "From the cost savings to the environmental benefits, it's a win-win situation."
To further enhance the service, a second vehicle has recently been introduced to the scheme. This new car is located at Rowan House on Sheepen Road, in addition to the existing car at Priory Street car park. This addition ensures members can access vehicles more readily, improving the overall accessibility and reliability of the service.
Cllr Luxford Vaughan, portfolio holder for Planning, Environment and Sustainability said: "Encouraging sustainable and shared transport options is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and improving the air we breathe in our city. The Colchester Car Club provides a cost effective, convenient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional first or second car ownership, aligning perfectly with our goals for a greener and healthier future."
