Council acquires new woodland site – Iron Latch Wood

PUBLISHED: 5 August 2024

Colchester City Council has announced that it has taken on a new woodland site, locally named "Iron Latch Wood." Located three miles west of Colchester city centre, in Eight Ash Green, this 15-hectare site is situated off Halstead Road, down Iron Latch Lane.

The site was officially acquired in autumn 2022 and its management transferred to the council's Countryside Ranger Team last summer. The acquisition was part of a Section 106 agreement, in which developers must offer something to the local community that will enhance the local area in return for the granting of planning permission for their development.

Iron Latch Wood features a diverse range of flora and fauna. The site is home to Nightingales, has a Great Crested newt population and Grass Snakes. The woodland has mix of wildflowers and a wetland area. In autumn, the woodland transforms into a vibrant display of golden and red foliage.

The council's Countryside Ranger Team will manage Iron Latch Wood to benefit both wildlife and the public. To understand current and potential uses of the site and gather suggestions for improvements, the council is seeking feedback from the community. The public are encouraged to complete a survey, which aims to gather detailed responses to ensure the site meets the needs of visitors, while also enhancing habitats for wildlife.

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “The acquisition of Iron Latch Wood is a significant addition to Colchester's green spaces. We are committed to preserving this natural habitat and making it accessible for everyone to enjoy. Public feedback will be crucial in helping us manage the site effectively and sustainably.”

Temporary signage will be installed to indicate council ownership and outline guidelines to protect the site's wildlife.

Residents are encouraged to take part in this survey to help shape the future of Iron Latch Wood.
