Discover LGBTQ+ history at Colchester Castle

PUBLISHED: 26 July 2024

Colchester Castle has announced it will be running free monthly tours focusing on LGBTQ+ historical figures and themes, beginning this summer. The first tours will be offered Saturday, 3 August and Wednesday, 7 August and will last between 30 to 45 minutes. Each tour promises a unique exploration of LGBTQ+ history, with no two tours being the same.

From Julius Caesar's love for a Bithynian king to the stories of those imprisoned in Colchester Castle Gaol under accusations of sodomy, these tours cover a wide range of fascinating topics. Participants will gain an understanding of how LGBTQ+ history has shaped and been shaped by the historical and cultural context of different eras.

Highlights include the impact of Henry VIII's Buggery Act, which led to individuals like Richard Doo being imprisoned in Colchester Castle Gaol for accusations of homosexual activity; a British Queen's close relationship with two women in her court symbolising the male worshippers of Cybele, individuals born male who castrated themselves and lived as women in the service of the goddess. These tours offer an enriching perspective on LGBTQ+ history and its cultural significance.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection, said: "We are excited to offer these tours as part of our commitment to providing a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of history. The LGBTQ+ community has played a significant but often overlooked role throughout history, and these tours aim to shine a light on these stories."

To secure a place, interested participants are encouraged to book in advance by contacting Ben Paites via email at ben.paites@colchester.gov.uk. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended.
