Leisure World Colchester celebrates new funding for pool enhancements

PUBLISHED: 24 July 2024

Leisure World Colchester is thrilled to announce that it has received grant funding from Sport England's Swimming Pool Support Fund to install new swimming pool covers on the Fitness Pool, Dive Pit, and Teaching Pool.

These enhancements are part of a broader initiative to improve energy efficiency at Leisure World. To ensure this work takes place, The Fitness Pool and Teaching Pool will be closed from 12 August to 18 August for the installation.

The new pool covers will play a significant role in reducing heat loss and water evaporation, subsequently lowering humidity and the energy required to heat the pools. Once installed, the pool covers will be placed over the pools overnight helping to play a significant role in reducing heat loss and water evaporation, subsequently lowering humidity and the energy required to heat the pools.  The estimated annual energy savings from these covers are projected to be around 140,000 kWh, equivalent to approximately £5,200 based on current gas prices.

During the one-week closure, additional improvements will be made to the fitness pool hall to enhance its suitability for swim meets. This includes redecoration, installing a timing system for galas, adding Pool pod bolts, and redoing the end lane lines. These upgrades will create a more gala-friendly environment, benefiting both swimmers and spectators.

In addition to the pool covers, several new energy-efficient motors controlling ventilation systems around the building have been installed, also funded by the Sport England grant, further reducing electricity costs.

Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure said:The council is committed to enhancing the facilities at Leisure World to provide a better experience for all users while promoting sustainability and energy efficiency. We believe that the week-long closure for these improvement works will bring long-term benefits to both our residents and the environment.”

All projects are expected to be completed by the end of September 2024.
