Hazelmere Junior School was buzzing with excitement on Friday, 5 July, as pupils took part in a special celebration of "Walk With Words," an interactive walking route showcasing creative digital content. The event, attended by Colchester's Mayor Lesley Scott Boutell, marked a significant step towards the project's official launch.
"Walk With Words" is an innovative collaboration between Colchester City Council, the University of Essex, and the wider community, aimed at creating an interactive walking route linking Colchester City Centre, the University of Essex, and Greenstead. This unique project will feature 16 signposts adorned with QR codes, offering walkers access to a digital memory bank filled with creative content inspired by the area's rich history and vibrant community life.
At the heart of the workshop were pupils Anthony, Mimi, Harry, Ivy, Marie, and Brooke, who enthusiastically shared their poems crafted during last year's exploration of Salary Brook trail. One pupil read aloud this poignant piece: "I remember when I moved into Greenstead. I remember watching TV while my mum painted our bedroom. I remember seeing my room when it was done." Their contributions underscored the project's mission to engage local voices in celebrating Colchester's cultural tapestry.
The highlight of the event was Mayor Leslie Scott Boutell's address, where she commended the children's creativity and expressed her anticipation for the positive impact "Walk With Words" will have on the community, promoting unity, a deeper appreciation of Colchester, and the benefits of walking.
Cllr Luxford Vaughan, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Environment, and Sustainability, said: "This walking route not only celebrates our community's creativity but also encourages sustainable transport methods. By connecting Greenstead, the University of Essex, and the city centre, we are making it easier for residents and students to choose walking as a convenient and eco-friendly option."
The workshop concluded with a round of applause and certificates awarded to all participants, recognising their invaluable contributions to the project.
