Colchester City Council promotes sustainable living with compost bin giveaway

PUBLISHED: 8 May 2024

In celebration of International Compost Awareness Week (5 – 11 May) and to encourage residents to give home composting a go, the council is giving away 220-litre compost bins to 30 lucky entrants.

Composting is a natural process that transforms uncooked food and garden waste into a nutrient-rich soil improver. In Essex alone, approximately 25% of waste disposed of in general rubbish consists of food waste. This not only represents a financial loss but also poses environmental risks. When food waste ends up in landfills, it emits harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

By composting at home, residents can significantly reduce waste while producing a valuable fertiliser for their gardens, free of charge. Furthermore, creating compost at home provides numerous benefits:
  • It doesn’t take long to see results; your soil improver should be ready in 9 to 12 months.
  • Composting at home creates a tremendous home for insects, which in turn may encourage other wildlife such as hedgehogs and birds.
  • It’s a noteworthy excuse to spend more time outside with the family, and the perfect introduction for children to learn about nature.
  • Approximately 30% of waste content in the average household can be composted.

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Waste, said: "The compost bin giveaway underscores our commitment to promoting sustainable practices within our community. By encouraging residents to compost at home, we not only reduce waste, but also nurture a greener, more environmentally conscious Colchester."
