Colchester Borough Council has joined the nationwide campaign, planting commemorative trees across the borough in support of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative, created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.
The council’s Tree Plantings are taking place across the borough between May and December 2022.
An Oak tree, which will grow up to 20-40 metres tall, depending on the species, will be planted in 20 towns and parishes across the borough. Photos of the tree plantings will be shared on the Council’s social media pages; Facebook /EnjoyColchester, Twitter @YourColchester and Instagram @BetterColchester.
Local residents and organisations are being encouraged to take part too, by planting trees on their own land and recording their plantings on an interactive map that has been created for the initiative. Any trees planted from October 2021 to the end of the jubilee year in 2022 can be part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Project.
The Queen will receive this map of all the projects planted in her name as a gift from the nation.
Cllr Tim Young, The Deputy Mayor for Colchester, said: “The Queen’s Green Canopy campaign is another way that we can contribute to enhancing our local natural environment whilst also celebrating Her Majesty’s Jubilee.
“This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.”

This project also supports the council’s Woodland and Biodiversity project, which promotes working to develop a legacy of a greener borough for future generations.
