Colchester Borough Council’s ‘CAReless pollution’ campaign was Highly Commended at the Edie ‘Sustainability Leaders Awards’ in the Consumer Engagement Campaign category.

The national awards ceremony took place on 30 March 2022, where the campaign was singled out for commendation above big-name competition, such as ITV and Heineken.

The CAReless Pollution campaign was established in 2020 to tackle poor air quality in Colchester. The aim is to encourage drivers to switch off their vehicle engines when stationary, cutting pollution by up to 30%.

The campaign was developed in partnership with Meadows Communication, engaging with locals and using behaviour-change theory. Activity includes partnerships with businesses, school activity packs, ambient advertising, media stories and a Zorb-ball touring educational exhibition.

In the 12 months following the launch, there has been a 9% increase in engine switch-off. The campaign has received funding from the government Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to run for another 12 months.

Lindsay Barker, Colchester Borough Council Strategic Director of Policy and Place said: “We are delighted that the CAReless Pollution campaign has been Highly Commended in the Edie national sustainability awards. It is recognition of the team’s excellent work to improve air quality in the borough.
“The council is committed to leading on sustainability and green initiatives. Everyone has a part to play, information on small changes you can make which can add up to a significant impact can be found on our website.”
