Discover Colchester on foot, this Easter, with the launch of two new walking trails thanks to funding from the Government’s Welcome Back Fund.

Journey back in time and discover hidden Colchester. Colchester is packed with nationally important historic monuments, like Colchester Castle and the Roman City Walls, which are well-known to residents and visitors alike – but now you can delve even deeper into Colchester’s rich historic past with Visit Colchester’s latest trail.

Head off on foot and get ready to discover the stories behind lesser-known treasures within the built environment, alongside intriguing aspects of Colchester’s past. You can choose to follow the trail in its entirety or simply explore your favourite period of history using the timeline and the coloured key. Hidden Colchester can be downloaded for free at www.visitcolchester.com or you can purchase your souvenir copy from the Visitor Information Centre.

For those looking to stretch their legs for a longer walk, consider the Wivenhoe Trail, produced in response to many requests for this attractive and interesting route to be available as a publication. Take a day and meander along this beautiful urban and riverside walk. Journey from Colchester High Street to Wivenhoe High Street and Quay. Along the way, look out for art installations and wayfinding markers and take in some fabulous views along the winding route that follows the river Colne. The Wivenhoe Trail can be downloaded for free at www.visitcolchester.com or you can purchase your souvenir copy from the Visitor Information Centre.

Councillor Darius Laws, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Heritage, said: “Find some time to head out on foot and delve deeper into Colchester’s heritage. From a summerhouse in Castle Park copied from a Greek temple to the grave of Jacob Ringer, a descendent of Flemish refugees, who paid towards the fine levied on Colchester by Parliament after the Civil War Siege – there are so many hidden stories to discover. Contact the friendly team at the Visitor Information Centre to find out more.”
