Join the Great British Spring Clean and #BigBagChallenge
Keep Britain Tidy is calling on Colchester residents and schools across the borough to help improve the environment by taking part in the Great British Spring Clean 2022.
Running from 25 March to 10 April 2022, the Great British Spring Clean is organised nationally by Keep Britain Tidy and supported locally by Colchester Borough Council.
This year’s campaign is One Bag, One Big Difference outlining how every act to protect the environment, no matter how small, makes a big difference. When these acts are joined together, it results in tonnes of litter being removed from the environment. It also aims to rescue thousands of the plastic bottles and aluminium drinks cans that are simply thrown on the ground but could, very easily, be recycled.
Using the three bags full approach, volunteers will be asked to separate the litter they pick into three bags: one for plastic bottles, one for aluminium cans and a third for other rubbish.
The council’s Neighbourhood Services team will then collect these bags to ensure that they are recycled appropriately. They can also support your litter pick by providing you with bags, hi-vis jackets and loan you litter pickers, including extra-long ones for those tricky spots, smaller ones for children and ones specifically designed for use on beaches.
Councillor Bev Oxford, Portfolio Holder for Communities said: “Taking part in events like the Great British Spring Clean gives thousands of people the chance to combine their efforts and make a difference together.
"I encourage all residents to take part – it's such a great way to teach youngsters about caring for the environment!”
Councillor Simon Crow, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability said: “The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic initiative and I would encourage as many residents as possible to sign up to make a significant difference to their communities.
“Addressing attitudes around littering is one of the council’s main priorities. As well as helping to clean local areas, the #BigBagChallenge will also help raise awareness to discourage littering in the first place. These two elements reflect both our community and our individual responsibilities. Let’s hope all the effort during this year’s Great British Spring Clean leads to less litter being dropped in the future.”
Those that would like bags delivered and collected by our Neighbourhood Services team, or borrow litter pickers or hi-vis jackets will need to contact shrubend@colchester.gov.uk
The council’s new litter picking hubs are now available across the borough, providing the opportunity for people to borrow litter picking kit when they are out and about, then return them at the end of the day*.
