Colchester Borough Council is again flying the flag to mark Commonwealth Day on Monday, 14 March 2022.
Colchester will join Heads of State and Prime Ministers, Lord Mayors and Mayors, students, Girl Guides and Scouts, Sea, Army and Air Cadets, charities, community groups, Commonwealth ex-servicemen, and many others around the world, to raise Commonwealth Flags at 10am local time.
Colchester’s ceremony will see The Mayor, Councillor Robert Davidson, read out a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation.
Along with the Mayoress, Liz Davidson, and in the company of invited guests gathered on the Town Hall entrance steps, and the public, the Mayor will raise the specially commissioned Flag. The Flag will remain in place for one week.
This year’s Commonwealth Day will centre around the theme for the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – Delivering a Common Future – which highlights how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are ‘innovating, connecting and transforming’ to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade.
Given that 2022 is Her Majesty’s Jubilee Year, there will also be a special focus this year on the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth.
Mayor Robert Davidson said: “I’m delighted to be participating in this global event marking Colchester’s support for the Commonwealth, its communities and the values it upholds.
“At a time when conflict among nations threatens to undermine international peace and stability, it is fitting to be able to honour the value and co-operation of the Commonwealth.
“It is a great opportunity for the people of Colchester to celebrate the importance of maintaining bonds between nations and the benefits of friendship and co-operation that the Commonwealth stands for.”
Commonwealth Day 2022 will be celebrated nationwide with activities including debates, school assemblies, flag-raising ceremonies, street parties, cultural events and a multicultural, multifaith service at Westminster Abbey in London.
