From 28 May to 13 June, Keep Britain Tidy will once more be organising the UK’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign, the Great British Spring Clean 2021.
Colchester Borough Council have pledged our support for this year’s Great British Spring Clean.
Litter picking across the borough
This year’s campaign will not only see tonnes of litter being removed from the environment on our doorstep, it also aims to rescue thousands of plastic bottles and aluminium drinks cans that are thrown on the ground but could, very easily, be recycled.
Volunteers will be asked to separate the litter they pick into three bags: one for plastic bottles; one for aluminium cans; and a third for the rest of the rubbish.
Get involved
The Great British Spring Clean is about demonstrating that you love where you live – whether that’s by ‘pledging to pick’ while you are walking the dog or taking the kids to school, hosting a clean-up or joining someone else’s event.
We are asking all residents to pledge to do a litter pick during this time.
Following current government guidance, residents can get involved and show support for our Great British Spring Clean by registering as an individual, a group, or a school.

Equipment loans and bag collection service
Our Neighbourhood Services teams can help with:
- providing bin bags
- loaning litter pickers – with a selection of extra-long ones for getting into those tricky spots, special beach litter pickers that don't get clogged up with sand, and adult and children's litter pickers
- collecting bags to ensure that they are recycled appropriately
If you decide to run a litter pick, we can log your litter pick and provide the equipment and support you need.

Staying safe while taking part
This Spring, we want to make sure that everyone stays safe while doing their bit for the environment and being part of the pick.
You can visit Keep Britain Tidy for vital health and safety advice to make sure you are safe when litter picking. There is also specific coronavirus guidance on their website for individual and groups.
Government guidance on the lockdown may tighten or ease over time, so you should follow changes as they are announced.
